The Boston Barometer is a project that utilizes the City of Boston’s Tax Assessor’s Database, additional datasets on neighborhood indicators, and neighborhood narratives as way to understand Boston’s shifting physical and economic landscape. The project is a product of the 2013 Boston DataSwap, which gathered an interdisciplinary group of individuals from research, government, and civic organizations to use particular datasets to understand civic issues in Boston. With visualizations, data analysis, and civic input, the Boston Barometer aims to shed light on neighborhood inequality and generate further discussions on housing affordability in Boston. The project reports data on assessed housing values with neighborhood barometers on crime, businesses, service requests, inspection violations, and fires and highlights discussions and images in social media that are relevant to housing affordability in Boston. We encourage Boston residents, businesses, and local leaders to contribute their own stories of the physical and economic landscape of their neighborhoods.
